Symmastia in Breast Implants – How Is This Repaired?

It is possible that symmastia cannot be noticed right after surgery. It can happen any time a few days to months after a breast implant surgery. To repair symmastia, underlying skin tissues and fat will have to be rejoined to the breastbone.

With submuscular implants, the scar tissue is always eliminated from the pocket, then rolled up, giving sutures the opportunity to adhere. Lifelong sutures are used to attach the sternal skin below; the pocket’s remainder has to be sutured as well, normally with permanent sutures, giving barriers which will keep implants from going back to the breastbone again.

To eliminate all tension/pressure from the breastbone, the pocket normally has to be designed larger. Otherwise, breast implants will have to be considered for small ones. After surgery, a thong-bra is normally needed along with a rolled-up bandage. These are used in between the breasts to emphasize pressure on the breastbone.

Mondor’s Cord

This means an inflamed blood vessel, and is a risk that is also common in breast surgeries. Mondor’s cord heals on its own pace, and causes no permanent damage to the person. To help relieve from the discomfort brought about by Mondor’s cord, Ibuprofen and warm compresses are usually done.

However, Ibuprofen tends to thin the blood, and it is best to inform the surgeon right away for this.

Symptomatic Rupture in Breast Implants

Symptomatic rupture causes symptoms such as breast shape and/or size changes, lumps, pain, swelling, burning sensation, and hardness.

Changes in Sensation After a Breast Implant Surgery

Sensation changes in the nipples or breasts vary, and these may be felt temporarily, and even permanently. This seriously affects one’s comfort while breastfeeding, or responding sexually. During the healing period, it is expected for the patient to feel heightened sensitivity or numbness and is normally resolved in time.

It is important to note that changes in sensation after a breast implant surgery may take as long as to a year, sometimes, two, for normal sensation to be normal again. Some women are able to overcome this risk in a short amount of time after surgery.

However, the sensation may or may not be as normal as it was before the breast implant surgery, as changes in sensation can be unpredictable after an operation.
